What's with me and cliff-hangers?!

I know, I know. The post-adoption cliff-hangers on this blog are now two too many. :)

We are home and adjusting well, despite four horrible cases of jet lag! We've made the best of it with a couple middle of the night marathon play sessions, but I am hopeful tonight we will turn a corner and everyone will get the sleep we all need.

Kamron is such a lovable, squishy and delightful guy. He was tremendously serious at first, but the past couple of days we have seen more and more of his goofy side as he giggles and plays. He loves to play with toys and go for walks outside. Oh, and he loves to eat. This morning he pounded back an entire waffle and a handful of peeled and chopped grapes. With 6 teeth. Tonight he ate 10 sweet potato gnocchi and some toast. Amazing. He's only 10 months, but he's been enjoying table food for a while now and knows what he's doing with those 6 teeth!

Ned is doing a great job. She handled the trip like a pro and, even in the midst of terrible jet lag, has been very patient and kind with Kam...until he starts chewing on her clothes, that is. "Kamwun, dat gwoss! Don't suck on clothes; they're for wearing, not eating."

Good times. Anyway, more to come over the next couple days, but wanted to at least get a small update out there to say all is well! Stay tuned.

I600 (Immigration) Approval and 3 WEEKS?!?!

Today I made a phone call to our assigned immigration officer to inquire about our file status. Guess what? Our I600 was approved on March 21! And guess what? Our 171 (the official approval notice) came in the mail today!

Now for the real news. I e-mailed our agency with this update, as they need to communicate our approval date to the Korean agency to continue our processing. I got this e-mail back from the Korea program manager:
I've been looking at my files and it seems that the families who have been notified they can travel had their acceptance paperwork sent to Korea right around the same time as you and received I-600 approval about 2 weeks before you did. If travel keeps up like this you may be traveling closer to mid April.
Did you catch that last line? Mid-April. MID-APRIL. As in, 3 weeks from now. So if things continue as they have been in our agency's recent experience, we should get our travel call in about two weeks. And then we'll need to be in Korea within two weeks of that call.

Heads are spinning here tonight! (In a good sort of panic-induced way, of course.)

the non-update update

I know, I know. Bad, bad blogger.

You'd think that if I am too busy to update the blog that I'd have lots of exciting things to report on the blog. Ummmmm, yeah...not so much.

On the Kamron front: no news. Nothing but a few pieces of paper from immigration saying they received our paperwork and are "processing" it. Hmmmmm, processing, eh? So I called them. Turns out we've been assigned an immigration officer as of today. I will say this for the non-Hague adoption processing unit, they do answer the phone. So my call gets transferred to our assigned officer who tells me, based on our case number, "Oh, you're part of this huge pile I got assigned today. Ugh. This stack is huge. Like 40 families. I'm sooooo behind."

Reassuring, right?

So I turn on my Jen charm. (Incidentally, if you've never before witnessed said charm, it is...how do I say this humbly...powerful. Think Jedi mind tricks. Yeah, like
that.)

It goes something like this:
"Ohhhhhh, bummer. I know you probably don't hear 'thank you' enough, but there is not much better than getting that approval in the mail. Seriously, I know the paperwork end of your job must be so frustrating, but it's so cool that you are directly involved in so many families coming together. Not many people can say that at the end of a day. So, for what it's worth, 'thanks!' I'm just so excited to go get our little guy."

And she says:
"Wow, that's so nice of you to say. Well, I think I can get to you this week or early next. Why don't you call me mid-week next week and I'll give you an update on where I'm at. Hopefully you'll be all done. You can just call me directly."

So we'll see how long it takes to get that immigration approval...fingers crossed.

Besides that, we're waiting on a photo and narrative update and will hopefully have that within the next week or two. We sent a letter, photos and a Nedy original to our agency for forwarding to Kamron's foster mother. Nedy was so cute--when she found out I was writing a letter she said, "Ooooh, I have a GWEAT idea! I will send Kamwon's foster mudder a picture dat I draw myself!" and she returned a while later with a colorful masterpiece of random floating people holding balloons and walking floating dogs. Good stuff.

As for travel, we are still thinking early Mayish. Right now, in addition to the immigration processing here in the U.S., the Korean government is engaged in their process that will result in the issuance of Kamron's emigration permit and visa. We will only get a week or two of notice, so it will be frantic preparation time when the 'you can go now' call comes.

In the words of Nedy, "Oooooh, it's getting warmer outside! Dat means it's almost yitto brudder time!"

legals!

Our international agency reported that Kamron's "legals" arrived today and were overnighted to our local agency. "Legals" are the legal documents proving a child's availability for adoption. Receipt of this paperwork allows us to file the formal request with USCIS (immigration) to bring him home. Moving right along...

paperwork headed over the ocean

Got word from our agency today that our stack of referral acceptance paperwork was "perfect" and is already Korea-bound.

"Perfect" paperwork. Bliss. :)

I know, I know...where are his pics?

Sadly, I cannot post pics of Kamron (his first name...but you'll have to wait to learn the rest!) on the blog because the agency requires password protection, which is not a particularly functional part of Blogger. Sigh. He's soooooo adorable. Really, you should see him.

Soooooo...if you know us and haven't seen his pics yet and would like to, shoot me an e-mail or leave a comment here and I'll e-mail some of his scrumptiousness your way.

All of our referral acceptance paperwork is done, double-checked and ready to be overnighted to our agency. They will prepare our bundle of documents and forward it to Korea yet this week, and then the wait for travel begins. As of now, our agency reports that they are continuing to experience their longtime travel norm of 3-4 months following referral acceptance, so April or May in our case. C'moooooooon Spring!

BIG news! :)

And I do mean BIG news!

In March we began the process of adopting a baby boy from South Korea. We have three, soon to be four, nephews from Korea and were excited about giving our son a "built in" network of Korean guys! At the time our paperwork made its way to Korea in June, we were told to expect a 4-6 month wait for referral. Being veterans of the long and winding road to China, we weren't quite ready to believe that a referral could come so fast...but they proved us wrong! Today, home with a sick Ned (more on that in a later post), I checked my phone at lunch time to see a missed call from our adoption agency. Trust me when I say that a missed call from an adoption agency is the source of immediate excitement/angst. So I tried calling back, as I had just missed their call by minutes. But turns out they were on the phone with Dan...telling him all about...OUR SON!

We have a baby boy, 6 months old and--are you ready for this?--a whopping 23 pounds! When I spoke with our agency, they were giggling about what a "Buddha Baby" he is. Ooooooh, I couldn't wait to see him! But Dan was at work and sick Ned needed a nap, so I put her in bed, took a shower (hey, I was home with a sick kid--who cares that it was 1:00pm?) and waited for Dan to come home. Last time when we got Ned's referral, I was at work and saw Nedy before Dan did. This time, I wanted all of us to see him together.

We got to our agency around 4:00 and sat down together to open the file and see his face for the first time. It is such a surreal moment, opening that folder. Like, "Hello, rest of my life." And when we opened that folder, I couldn't believe how sweet, adorable and BIG our baby is! He has such a gentle, calm look about him. Ooooh, he's just scrumptious. But you'll have to take my word for it for now, as our international agency does not allow photo posting on blogs. But I'll be calling them tomorrow to see just what I can get away with in that regard... ;)

What did Ned say about him? "He's a wiwwy big baby. Yike, I not sure how I fit him in my Ewgo to cawwy him awound." (Ergo is our baby carrier. Apparently Nedy's had delusions of grandeur about hauling "yitto brudder" around in it...kid cracks me up.) Dan made the mistake of making a joke at dinner about how "yitto brudder" is bigger than Nedy to which she promptly and indignantly replied, "He not dat big, Baba. He just a yitto bit big. Fow a baby."

Our agency confirmed that we are on track for travel to bring him home in 3-4 months, so looks like this family will be Seoul-bound in April or so! I told Nedy that we'd go to Korea to bring home baby when it gets warmer outside and winter is gone away, to which she replied, "Yitto brudder prolly be even bigger by den." Probably so, kiddo. Mama's arms better start working out. :)

More to come...stay tuned!

Court

A court appointment later, Ned has a Wisconsin birth certificate.

Our adoption was finalized in China, but social workers recommend what's known as "readoption" in the family's home state for the sole purpose of getting a local birth certificate for the child for future school enrollment ease, etc. We are lucky in Wisconsin, as in some states you have to hire an attorney and the readoption process is pricey and drawn out. Here it's a simple process--filing a couple forms, $10 fee, and a brief court appearance with your social worker.

At first Ned was intrigued and thought the microphone was pretty fun, but soon after it started her feet were up on the desk, thumb was in and turtle was over her face. Court got a lot cooler for her after the proceeding when the bailiff brought her a toy. They do this for all readoptions. Nice, eh?

So, that's it. Aside from one last report to China in February, the paperwork is complete. For this, I am THANKFUL. :)

Never in my life wanted a snow day so badly...

Okay, so I have NO NEWS. Nothing. Of course, this month would have to be the absolute quietest month in the China adoption rumor world EVER. I keep hitting refresh on RQ hoping for something, ANYTHING. But there's NOTHING.

Many people have asked me with great interest what exactly this wait feels like at this point in the game. It feels CRAZY. It is all-consuming and exciting and still scary, because we don't know for absolute certain that we will make the cut this month. We think it's quite likely, but when a wait like this grows before your very eyes for 3 years, you get a little queezy about making predictions with any degree of certainty. So here we are. Excited, nervous, frazzled, excited, scared, excited...CRAZY.

Anyway, a big bad storm is a-brewin' here and I can only hope for a snow day tomorrow. I e-mailed my dream scenario to our adoption coordinator:

What I wouldn't give to just hear "the 23rd is in". And I also want a snow day really badly tomorrow. So, in my dreams, we get a snow day tomorrow and Dan and I are home wrapping Christmas presents and drinking egg nog while the snow piles up and then the phone rings...and it's you! And we have a kiddo. Dreeee-eeeee-eeeee-eeee-eam, dream, dream, dre-eam, dreeee-eee-eeee-eeee-eam...

Her reply:

This made me laugh out loud.

I don't know what she meant by that, but at least I'm still good for laughs.

C'moooooooon snow day! C'moooooooooon referral!

Maybe, just maybe?!

The last few days have been nerve-wracking. We are on the edge of being included in this batch according to all the rumors/projections. Waiting to find out if we're in or out is...CRAZY.

CRAZY.

Yesterday I had e-mail communication with our social worker at our international agency (we have 2 agencies--local and international) who will be the one to inform us when our referral arrives. She will call us with the news and was e-mailing to find out our contact numbers and the order she should try them in when she has news for us... Aaaaaargh!!! For real? REALLY?! SOON?!?!?

And then tonight this pops up on Rumor Queen (www.chinaadopttalk.com):

More than a whisper December 3rd, 2008

According to a North American agency, the 23rd is in.

It is not clear at this point whether they are just saying their people with LID’s of the 23rd are included and farther out dates may be included but they wouldn’t know about that since they only have information pertaining to their clients… or whether the actual cut off is the 23rd.
At this point I’ll give it a high R3 that the 23rd is included, but I’m not making a statement about the cut off just yet.

Seeing those words--"23rd is in"--even if it's just a rumor at this point is absolutely AMAZING. And CRAZY.

Patience is indeed a virtue.

Dare we get excited?!

On RQ (www.chinaadopttalk.com) this morning...

Not Much November 25th, 2008

While I don’t have anything concrete, as in dates… I am seeing information that means we should hopefully make it to at least the “Spring Small” date from my projections, which means we should (assuming what I’m hearing is correct) make it to at least the 23rd. There is even hope that we’ll make it to the Horrid case of the 27th.

(NOTE TO SELF: Breathe.)

And now I break into song..."All I want for Christmas is a picture of my kid...a picture of my kid...a picture of my kid." In all seriousness, there was never a part of this wait as hard as these last few weeks. The wait grew and grew and grew for 3 years and we went with the flow. But the light at the end of the tunnel is bright enough that we're fully awake now. BRING ON THE KIDDO!

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

Bring me a paper bag. Please.

The November batch of referrals covered people logged in through 02/17/06. Yes, through 02/17/06.

Yes, 2 days.

So, there are 5 days of log-ins before us. Meaning, China needs to span 6 days of log-ins for us to be included in the December batch. China has averaged 5.9 days of log-ins per month over the past 12 months. Seems like a cruel joke, right? BUT, RQ (http://www.chinaadopttalk.com/) posted her projections today based on the most recent batch and the results of her LID polls. It should be noted that last month her projection in her most conservative column ('Spr 2008 Small') for the November batch was through 02/17/06. She was right on.

So what is she predicting for the December batch that should be here within the next 25-30 days? Well, here's her guess right from the site:

Per RQ's "worst case scenario", we should be in in December. We should see her face within a month.

I have to go breathe into a paper bag now.

Seriously. :)

Update on the 2/16 mystery

A quick update on the 2/16 mystery from my last post...

NO CLUE. No one knows. Indeed some 2/16/06 people did receive referrals in a separate batch from the latest 2/10-2/15/06 batch. But not all 2/16 people received referrals. Apparently, none of the agencies know what it means and the CCAA is not offering explanation.

My guess is that they were sent ahead in a rare CCAA "oops" moment. The CCAA never issues partial LID days. That is, they match all the baby dossiers they have to parents each month, but they will only send referrals through the latest date that they were able to complete in its entirety. Since it is highly unlikely that there would be exactly enough baby dossiers to match through an exact date, it is likely that there are babies matched to parents each batch that are "held back" to be sent with the full date in the next batch. I think those referrals were accidentally mailed out ahead of the next batch. Anyway, that's my guess. So, I don't think we're any further ahead really, but it's GREAT that those kiddos will be with Mom and Dad faster than if they were sent with the next official batch and that those families got such an unexpected surprise!

So, bottom line, still thinking beginning of December!

Adoption Update

The CCAA's monthly batch of referrals matched families logged-in (LID) through 02-15-06. Again, we are LID 02-23-06... Getting closer! China Adoption Forecast (www.chinaadoptionforecast.com) is now predicting:

Our prediction for LID 2006-02-23:

China has 8 days of dossiers to be processed before they get to your dossier. China currently processes about 6.1 days of dossiers each month.

Our best guess: 2008-11-19

Since China generally sends out referrals in a batch about once per month, your referral date could easily vary +/- one month depending on whether you just get included or just get missed in a particular batch.

So this doesn't change our guess that our referral will be here end of November/beginning of December.

BUT...some drama popped up on Rumor Queen (http://chinaadopttalk.com/) tonight. (For those who don't follow the China adoption community, RQ is the place we all go to find out what is going on. This amazing, anonymous person referred to as 'RQ' gathers and interprets tons of data and acts as a central point for all things China adoption via her blog. Without RQ, the past 3 years would have been much more difficult.)

ANYWAY, tonight this post pops up on RQ...

Another batch? October 8th, 2008
A few people with 2/16 LID’s are reporting that their agency says their referral is on the way. Anyone else hearing this? Anyone with a LID beyond the 16th?

Ummmmm....2/16 people getting referrals after the CCAA just stated Monday that they got through 2/15?!?! What does this mean? NO CLUE.

But it may mean we're even closer...stay tuned!

Back to Blogland with an Adoption Update...

Where does time go? I have no idea, but somehow nearly 4 months have passed since our last post. And I must have thought "hey, I should blog about that" a million times between then and now. I have no excuse. But I do have news that will eventually...some day...lead to my excuse for getting nothing done...

Today referrals began rolling in quite unexpectedly, as it has only been 22 days since the last round. (That's a record!) For those unfamiliar with the China adoption process, the CCAA (government agency in China that handles both domestic and international adoption) sends out batches (for lack of a better word) of referrals (the matches!) about once a month. China's system is very orderly. Upon receipt, the CCAA scans the dossier of every family seeking adoption through China into their system. The date of that "log in" is known as your "LID" (log-in date) and marks your place "in line". When we started this process in summer of 2005, the CCAA sent out about 30 days of LIDs every month and families received their referral about 7-8 months after LID. By late 2005, the CCAA began sending out fewer and fewer referrals each month. Within the past year, an average of 6 LIDs have been referred each month.

We have been logged-in since 02-23-06. Yep, since February 23, 2006. Yep, 30 months. Yep, 30 months and still counting.

So, the news? Well, the CCAA, with the round of referrals received by agencies today, has made it into February 2006! OUR MONTH! Matches have been made for families logged-in through 02-09-06.

What does this mean for us? Well, according to the China Adoption Forecast website (http://chinaadoptionforecast.com/) updated today:

Our prediction for LID 2006-02-23:

China has 14 days of dossiers to be processed before they get to your dossier. China currently processes about 6 days of dossiers each month.

Our best guess:
2008-11-14

Since China generally sends out referrals in a batch about once per month, your referral date could easily vary +/- one month depending on whether you just get included or just get missed in a particular batch.

Will we really have our referral in November? Who knows?! November, December... But the point is that there are only 14 days of dossiers to be matched before they get to ours. We are really close! (Though not close enough for my Mom who wants this kid here yesterday...) We will travel to bring K home 6-8 weeks following referral.

So much to do, so little time!
